The Akari Chargers finished their PVL 2024 All-Filipino conference with a sweep of the cellar-dwelling Strong Group Athletics last Saturday.

Akari, led by team captain Michelle Cobb, ended their campaign on a great note after a roller-coaster ride in this conference.

“I think, samin, it’s just really ending the [conference] well and we’ve been through a lot of tough losses so siguro okay na rin na ganito yung ending namin despite na hindi namin naachieve yung goal namin this [conference],” Cobb said.

Despite falling short of their goal, Cobb is hopeful that the heartbreak of this conference will only fuel the Chargers to perform better in the future.

“But again and again, I would say na hopefully this is all just part of the process for Akari and the whole franchise,'” she added.

Cobb, however, pointed out the one thing the team must improve on to overcome the hump.

“I think yung top of my head po na kailangan po talaga naming i-improve is yung confidence so for me, nakukuha kasi yun every game eh. Siguro makikita pa rin namin yun kung mape-penetrate namin yung mga teams above us.”

If the Chargers believe they can defeat the teams at the bottom of the standings, they must also have confidence in their ability to compete with those at the top.

“Confident kami na we will beat the ones below us but our goal really is to also be part of yung unpredictability sa taas. Gusto naming maging part nun so hopefully [next conference],“ Cobb emphasized.

Is there still a missing piece for an already talent-loaded Akari squad to contend for a title? Cobb doesn’t think so. For the former La Salle standout, the Chargers already have the personnel — they just need cohesion to maximize their full potential.

“Honestly, ako feel ko, parang hindi naman super need [ng new additions]. We just have to foster the team now. We have to parang laro lang kami nang laro nang kami lang kasi dun namin makukuha yung lakas ng loob, yung tulungan sa loob kung ifofoster namin yung team namin ngayon kasi nakikita ko lang na lack namin the past season is really confidence kasi skill-wise we’re up there also,” said Cobb.

It’s not going to be easy, though. Forming a championship team doesn’t happen overnight, and Cobb, who has been Akari’s captain since the team joined the league in 2022, knows this well.

“Sobrang iba and ayun din siguro yung inisip namin dati na this really takes time lang talaga so hopefully paakyat lang kami ng paakyat and sinasabi ko rin sa kanila na kailangan din talaga nating maging patient sa sarili natin, sa kasama natin, sa coaches, sa management kasi ‘yun nga first naman din eh. First time ng management namin magbuo ng team. First time namin maging part ng ganitong team so it’s a process.”
