Besides team captain Lucille Almonte, senior middle blocker Lorene Toring proved to be another anchor for the rookie-laden Adamson University.
Toring displayed leadership and support to the rest of the Lady Falcons, giving boost to the team on their way to a second-place finish in the recently-concluded Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals.
Albeit not getting the coveted crown, the 6’0 middle blocker found a silver lining in Adamson’s Finals loss last Sunday: it meant that they still have room to grow.
“Actually sa 1 month preparation, it’s not bad na nakasilver kami knowing na rebuilding team pa. Big factor na nakuha namin yun kasi naisip namin na marami pa dapat i-improve sa team, and I hope na this coming September (Shakey’s) mapakita namin siya game,” said Toring.
The 2019 PVL Collegiate Conference Best Middle Blocker shared with Akari Sports that the SSL developed her maturity on the court, leading the charge for the team every game.
“Biggest learning ko this SSL is the maturity talaga na I need to step up for myself and for them,” said Toring.
Moreover, the Adamson mainstay learned the importance of adhering to the tasks given by their coaches regardless of circumstances.
“Second is no matter what happens, kailangan namin i-obey yung pinapagawa ng coaches without complaining,” she added.
As grueling as the preparations and games could be, Toring wanted to somehow make things lighter for her teammates, especially the rookies, by always telling them to have fun.
“Kinakausap ko yung mga rookies and guide them also lalo na pag game, I remind them always na enjoy every training and every game. And may term kami na “GV GV” meaning po yun na good vibes good vibes lang palagi kahit nahihirapan na sa training.”
With the conclusion of the SSL, Toring believed that the Lady Falcon’s silver-medal run made a statement around the volleyball community and helped each one of them realize that they could fight against the best of the best.
“Nakatulong ito sa team na nakita nila na kaya parin namin lumaban or may ibubuga kahit rebuilding,” said Toring.
However, the Lady Falcons are not satisfied.
According to the Cebuana, their campaign only pushed them to sharpen their game and to prove to everyone that they are a team that refuses to quit.
“Sobrang laking tulong ng SSL samin to the point na-inspire pa kami to work hard and to prove them na di kami basta-basta sumusuko.”
