ADAMSON SOARS PAST FEU IN UAAP 85 GIRLS VOLLEY OPENER

After three long years of the competition being cancelled due to the pandemic, the UAAP girls volleyball tournament, now in its 85th season, has successfully returned Monday morning at the Paco Arena in Manila.

In their maiden voyage, the Akari-backed Adamson girls volleyball team tallied a three-set win against Far Eastern University, 27-25, 25-20, 25-17.

Though the Baby Falcons swept the opponents, the game did not come without a hiccup as FEU led in the early goings of the match, prompting Adamson head coach JP Yude to ask his wards to snap out of slow start.

“Sabi ko kung kaya ang kalaban, wag tayo mag relax. Kailangan sila ang sumabay sa tempo natin, hindi tayo ang sasabay sa kanila,” he told Akari Sports.

“Hindi dahilan na first game kaya panget ang galaw. I told them, push natin sarili natin. Kung lamang tayo, dikdikin natin ang kalaban,” he added.

And pounce they did.

Anchored on the excellent defense of libero Juris Manuel and the efficient playmaking of setter Ghail Cuenca, team captain Shaina Nitura and fellow outside hitter Red Bascon shouldered most of the scoring load to put the Baby Falcons in the win column.

“‘Yung performance nila ngayon very good naman kasi they always follow the instructions,” Yude shared.

“Sa ngayon, siguro nasa 80% palang sila and umaasa tayo na tumaas pa ang laro nila.”

With a tight schedule that will see the San Marcelino squad playing five games in the first round in a span of nine days, Yude and the Baby Falcons will return right away on the court Tuesday, 8AM, at the same venue to face perennial contender UST.

“Bibigyan natin sila ng panahon to recover well kaya later today, we’ll just give them something light to do para preparation din para bukas,” he closed.
