The Nxled Chameleons held their ground in a three-set loss to the powerhouse Creamline Cool Smashers, 18-25, 18-25, 20-25, in the PVL 2024 Reinforced Conference.
Jhoana Maraguinot started the game for the first time this conference and led the Chameleons’ way with nine points, six excellent digs, and 13 excellent receptions, while Meegan Hart and Chiara Permentilla contributed seven and six points, respectively.
On the other hand, Creamline’s American import Erica Staunton and Bernadette Pons scored 13 points each, while Michelle Gumabao dropped 12 points.
The Chameleons looked to extend the match to a fourth set, racing to an 11-5 lead in the third frame. However, the Cool Smashers displayed championship poise to claw back into the game as Lorrie Bernardo took the lead for Creamline, 16-17.
Hart then connected with a quick hit to tie the match at 20-all, but the Cool Smashers once again showed composure down the stretch and unleashed a 5-0 run to secure the Creamline victory.
Nxled stayed within shouting distance in the second set as Lycha Ebon won a joust at the net to cut their deficit to one, 16-17. However, Gumabao and co. went on another 8-2 run as Creamline took a 2-0 lead in the match after dominating the opening set.
The Chameleons closed out Pool A with a 1-4 record and will begin the next round against the Capital1 Solar Spikers on Saturday, August 10 at the same venue. Meanwhile, the Cool Smashers secured the top spot in the same pool with a 4-1 slate.
