The Philippines are off to a strong 2-0 start.
NAKHONPATHOM, THAILAND — The Akari-Philippines U18 Women’s Volleyball Team overcame a tough four-set challenge from Malaysia, 25-20, 27-29, 25-22, 25-18, to capture their second straight win in the 22nd Princess Cup Women’s U18 South East Asian Volleyball Championship at the Nakhonpathom Gym, Sunday.
After taking the first set, the Philippines saw itself staring at a 22-24 deficit in the second frame. The Pinays then regrouped and took advantage of the Malaysian’s costly turnovers to tie the match at 27-all. However, Eunice Tian Ye did not let the opportunity slip away, drilling the last two points to tie the match at 1 set apiece.
Akari-Philippines responded immediately as it established a 16-10 lead in the third. Malaysia cut the deficit to one, but the former showed composure to fend off the latter’s comeback attempt and take a 2-1 advantage.
With momentum on their side, the Philippines pounded Malaysia in the fourth set as Lianne Penuliar hammered an overpass to secure the victory.
The Philippines return to action against home team Thailand today at 5:30 p.m. (Philippine Time) still at the same venue.
