SUBSTITUTE Geoffrey Marqueses scored the lone goal of La Salle-Zobel’s 1-0 win over Ateneo in the UAAP high school boys football tournament on Saturday at the UP Football Stadium.
It was a goalless first 73 minutes until Marqueses, a national U17 standout, nailed a header from a free kick awarded after a foul by Blue Eagles forward Santi Remulla to put the Junior Green Booters ahead.
La Salle-Zobel midfielder Tobias Paulino came close in doubling his side’s lead, but his shot went wide, leaving Marqueses’ goal enough for the Muntinlupa-based school to claim three points.
“Kita ninyo naman very tight yung game,” said coach Arvin Soliman after the Junior Green Booters moved up to six points in third place in the table.
“Luckily, we converted from a set-piece. We practiced set-pieces like that because we’re expecting that we will score against Ateneo through set-pieces. May isang nakalusot so it’s a good win for us,” Soliman added.
La Salle-Zobel, which thanks Nxled for the support, is actually level with Ateneo with six points but is ahead on goal difference, and is just a point off defending champion University of Santo Tomas.
Far Eastern University-Diliman remains on top of the standings with nine points.
Up next for La Salle-Zobel is tournament debutants Adamson at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the same Diliman pitch.
