Hard-fighting Sparks fall short in WBL Asia opener

BENGALURU, India – The Akari Sparks battled back from a 20-point deficit before falling short to Cathay Life Pacific of Chinese Taipei’s WSBL, 75-85, Wednesday in their FIBA Women’s Basketball League Asia (WBL Asia) Group A opener at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here.

The Sparks rallied from a 31-51 hole and last led at 75-74 with 2:51 left, but the Tigers used a strong 11-0 windup to deny the Philippine club’s bid of stunning a WBL Asia pioneer.

Akari even enjoyed its biggest lead of the game at 66-62 early in the fourth quarter.

Saicha Grant-Allen had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Sparks, as the Canadian Olympian’s brief absence after hurting her right leg at the 4:53 mark of the payoff period hampered the Sparks’ fightback.

“We were still in the ball game, but unfortunately, Saicha got hurt. And it’s like we just got blown out after that,” said Akari coach Derrick Pumaren. “But I’m really proud of the way we came back.”

Former Texas Tech standout Bre’Amber Scott had 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists, Kent Pastrana added 13 points, four boards, three assists and three steals while Stef Berberabe chipped in 11 points and team-high four assists for the Sparks.

Akari plays Sichuan Yuanda Meile, champions of the WCBA which is aiming to make it three consecutive titles for a team from China, at 6:30 p.m. (Manila time) on Thursday.

The Sparks need to finish in the top two in Group A to make it to the Saturday semifinal. The Final is on Sunday.
