Hope Christian High School came back from a set down to turn back De La Salle Zobel in a thrilling finals encounter and cop the Akari National High School Volleyball Championships Metro Manila title last Saturday at the Tivoli Royale Country Club.
Setter Chenae Basarte controlled the game’s tempo and made full use of Hope’s arsenal as they defeated the Junior Archers, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20, in Quezon City.
Mycah Go and Irah Jaboneta took turns demolishing La Salle Zobel’s suddenly porous defense while Cess Maulana, Ethan Arce and Corrine Apostol also contributed as the wards of coach Jerry Yee topped the field that featured the best teams in the NCR.
With Angel Canino and Justine Jazareno solid in the opening set, the Junior Archers looked poised to nab the championship, as Hope fell into a maze of errors.
But Hope got going in the second set, opening a 6-1 advantage and turning Zobel into a team devoid of composure.
Canino, Jazareno and Vanessa Gandler were virtually non-factors from then on, as Hope’s solid floor and net defense, and Basarte’s playmaking spelled the difference.
Both teams will play in the National Finals this weekend, along with bronze medalist FEU Diliman and fourth-placer UST.
