After trailing by as much as 12 points in the final quarter, the Adamson Soaring Falcons staged a late-game rally that fell short as they succumbed to the UST Growling Tigers, 80-74, on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
It was a close battle for Adamson and UST early on as neither team led by more than six points until midway through the third quarter. It was towards the end of the third frame when Mark Nonoy led a 13-2 UST run to break the game open in their favor.
The Growling Tigers were poised to run away with the win when they built their largest lead, 67-55, at the 9:19 mark of the fourth quarter. However, the Falcons took one last stand which was reminiscent of their first-round encounter with UST. Adamson held UST scoreless for the next five minutes as they built a 12-0 run to tie the game.
This time though, UST knew how to respond to Adamson’s fightback. The Tigers outscored the Falcons, 13-7, in the last four minutes of the game to escape with the win.
Joem Sabandal played his best game of Season 82 thus far with 18 points (4/5 three-point shooting) and six rebounds to lead all scorers. Simon Camacho and Lenda Douanga both flirted with double-double outputs as they combined for 17 points and 19 rebounds. Jerrick Ahanmisi chipped in 11 markers in the loss.
Mark Nonoy led the Tigers to the victory with an all-around performance. He contributed 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Chabi Yo posted 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Rhenz Abando and Renzo Subido added 13 and 11 markers, respectively.
With the loss, Adamson dropped its third straight game late in the elimination round. They will enter their final game of Season 82 against DLSU on Wednesday holding a 4-9 record. This will also be the final UAAP game for Simon Camacho, Kristian Bernardo, Keith Zaldivar, Egie Mojica and Val Chauca wearing Adamson’s colors.
