The Cool Smashers topped Chinese pro team Fujian Anxi in a thrilling-five setter, 25-18, 19-25, 15-25, 25-19, 15-12.
Top setter Jia Morado opened the first set with a service ace while opposite spiker Michele Gumabao quickly added two to give them a 3-1 lead. Fujian Anxi had a hard time getting their groove giving Creamline free points from their service and reception errors.
Former Lady Falcon Jema Galanza entered the second set blasting with powerful through the block hits over Fujian’s towers. Their Chinese counterparts retaliated with smart plays and quick hits to give them a six-point cushion, 21-15 kudos to Liang Guiquian’s consistent tough serves.
This persisted through the third set which gave the visitors an early 4-0 lead before superstar Alyssa Valdez broke the streak with a cross court hit. Creamline struggled with their back row defense that Fujian took advantage of, eventually winning the set.
Both teams exchanged unforced errors in the 4th set with Creamline recovering faster giving their opponents hard serves. Valdez took care of the deciding set with her smart hits negating China’s blocks. Sato also delivered quick hits while Morado contributed with service aces to give her team the victory.
After the game, Michele Gumabao told Akari Sports how it was very challenging for her team to compete against the 6’3” players of Fujian. “We were struggling sa palo talaga kasi they are a tall team and I don’t think we prepared that well for this, but still very fortunate to have the win,” the former Adamson assistant coach ended.
