It was all smiles in the dugout this time around as the Lady Falcons notched their first win of the season after three tough sets against the NU Lady Bulldogs.
Though new to his role, head coach Onyok Getigan’s familiarity with the team helped him bring out the best in his players and get the victory.
Building on the parts of the game they were having success with before, the Lady Falcons leaned on their improved blocking ability to control the game. The towering combo of Joy Dacoron and team captain Eli Soyud led the block-party which saw them attempt 53 blocks to score 11 total points.
On offense the Falcons turned on their after-burners with Bern Flora blasting spikes from all angles to lead all scorers with 15 points.
Coach Onyok emphasized that what he did was mostly to simplify what his players have already been taught, “Ang sa akin kasi, simple lang, isang salita lang yun na agad ang gagawin.” “Wala namang binago sa plan, we’re still using the same plays naman.”
With a win finally under their belt, the Lady Falcons sense a change in the winds. Coach Onyok wants to bring his winning ways to the team and does not mince words when it comes to his goal for them, “Gusto ko magchampion.”
But champions aren’t built in a day, coach Onyok reminds his wards that in order to reach their goal, “doble sipag ang kailangan. Pag-igihan natin sa practice, hindi talaga mawawala ‘yan.”
With their first win in the books, the Lady Falcons still have a shot at a place in the Final Four, but FEU stands in their way next.
