First, the UAAP CDC title, now three gold medals in the Asian stage.
Fresh from their victorious stint in the 2018 Asian Cheerleading Invitational Championships in Singapore, the Adamson Pep Squad has won not only the respect of their Asian counterparts but the hearts of the crowd as well.
And just like in the collegiate ranks, the San Marcelino crew put on a dominant performance to win three gold medals and a silver medal in events they participated in.
“Nakaka-proud kasi ibang level na ito eh,” coach Jam Lorenzo said during the team’s arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Tuesday night.
The UAAP Season 80 CDC champs collected the gold medals in the pom, coed group stunts elite, and coed group stunts premiere in their maiden campaign in the Asian level.
But for the coaching staff, the CDC title and their triumphant campaign in the international stage is just the beginning of Adamson’s resurgence as a cheerleading powerhouse.
“For the coaching staff, it’s a start of a new chapter for Adamson Pep Squad and an upgraded system for the coming UAAP season,” Lorenzo told Akari Sports.
Now donning not only the name of Adamson but the country as well, the squad is optimistic of their chances in their title defense next season, especially with the lessons they have learned competing against some of the best teams in the continent.
“Definitely mas namotivate kami, kasi siyempre, maiinspire ka sa mga nakita namin na nagawa nung ibang mga teams. ‘Yung competence ng mga bata, mas na-boost kasi ibang level of competition na ‘yun.”
“It’s a fulfilling task na nagawa namin kasi maganda ang input sa amin kasi na-appreciate kami ng crowd, na-appreciate ng mga tao ang talento ng mga Pilipino.”
Asked which was tougher between the Asian Championships and the UAAP, Lorenzo opted to go into their differences technicality-wise.
“Well, halos the same ‘yung pressure. Sa UAAP, iisang piyesa lang ang inilalaban mo, dito kasi sa sinalihan natin, apat ang ipinaglaban natin.”
With still months to go before they return to the UAAP mat, Lorenzo already has a promise to the Adamson community.
“Well, sa ngayon talaga, first time nag-champion ang Adamson, hindi natin ile-let go yun. As early as now, magiging matindi ang bakbakan sa lineup ng CDC ngayon kaya expect us to give our best.”
