Another battle to stay alive.
Adamson takes on streaking Ateneo in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum armed with the goal of winning just to stay alive one more day.
Coach Air Padda said her team will go all-out against the Lady Eagles, as another loss might put them in legitimate danger of missing the Final Four.
“We’re playing for survival again,” she said. “There’s no room for complacency. If we don’t win that game, it’s gonna hurt us a lot. It’s gonna put us further away from our goal.”
Odds are stacked against the Lady Falcons, even though Ateneo needed five sets — and a late Jho Maraguinot eruption — to beat them in their first-round encounter.
But if the San Marcelino belles play with teamwork and consistency like they did in their payback win against NU last Wednesday, there’s a good chance for an upset.
“We just need the girls to basically accept what’s been happening to our team right now and do what we need to do,” Padda added.
That means solid production from primary offensive weapons Jema Galanza and Mylene Paat, and an uptick in contribution from struggling outside hitter Eli Soyud.
Likewise, Adamson needs its middle blockers to work double time, as they will be up against the Lady Eagles’ twin towers in Bea de Leon and Maddie Madayag.
Padda recognizes how Ateneo has gone from a mediocre 0-2 start to a second-best 7-3 in less than two months.
“Ateneo is a very good team,” the American coach stressed. “You can tell their season is just getting better. They had a rocky start.”
