ANGELES CITY — Holy Family Academy dug deep from its bag of tricks to upend Juan R. Liwag Memorial National HS, 25-13, 25-27, 25-16, 29-27 and win the 2018 Akari National High School Volleyball Championships Central Luzon leg Sunday here.
Tournament MVP Raven Dayrit came up big for HFA, firing rockets from the service line while puncturing the Gapan squad’s defense with her timely hits.
Thus, the Angeles crew booked a ticket to the national finals set on March 17-18 at Adamson University.
Dayrit and middle blocker Therese Manalo took turns in breaking JRLMNHS’ spirit, with the latter delivering booming quick hits that pushed their foes to the limit.
It was nonetheless a gallant fight for Juan R. Liwag, after star player Rachelle Roldan suffered what looked to be a tournament-ending ankle injury in the Final Four.
But with her school easily crushed in the first set, Roldan, who was rushed to the hospital a couple of hours before the championship, returned to the court and gave JRLMNHS a much-needed jolt of energy and inspiration.
Alas, Roldan’s efforts weren’t enough, as Juan R. Liwag faltered in the fourth even after coming at set point twice.
