CAGAYAN DE ORO — After two days of intense competition, perennial Palaro contender Iligan City National High School proved their worth as they came out on top of the Mindanao Leg of the 2018 Akari National High School Volleyball Championships.
They breezed through the competition in dominant fashion — sweeping their group in Day 1 before dispatching Libertad National High School and Valencia City National High School in the quarterfinals and Final Four respectively.
Darkhorse Pilgrim Christian School were able to hold them off in the early goings of the gold medal match but the seasoned squad proved to be too tough to handle, completing their rampage with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 sweep of the Cagayan de Oro-based squad.
National commissioner Jerry Yee only had one takeaway from the tournament.
“Sa talent, maraming talented. I can honestly say na may at least tatlong UAAP-bound akong nakita as early as now in terms of talent and skills,” Yee, who is also scouting for potential collegiate players, told Akari Sports Sunday afternoon.
Pilgrim Christian College, who had to go through quotients to escape the classification phase on Saturday, took home the silver medal while Bukidnon-based Valencia City National High School copped the bronze.
“Sobrang fulfilling ng feeling na nakatulong tayo sa grassroots dito na dati kaunti ang support but the sponsors are coming in, kaya I thank Akari for really helping in this,” Yee shared during the awarding ceremonies held at the Corpus Christi School gymnasium.
“We have received good feedback from the players, coaches, and parents. We are really happy that we have helped players here.”
The tournament will fly to Iloilo City next week for the Visayas Leg and the veteran coach has high expectations there.
“Mas mataas expectations ko lalo na at malakas ang Western Visayas pagdating sa Palaro. Hopefully sumali ang mga teams doon para makatulong rin tayo, of course through Akari.”
