Inaugural Akari Cup to open on November 11

Akari Lighting, in partnership with Adamson University, will hold the very first Akari Cup volleyball tournament starting November 11, Saturday at the Adamson University Saint Vincent Gym.

Slated to run until early December, the nine-team invitational league will feature the Army Jetti Smashers, Enderun Colleges, King’s Montessori, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy, Rainbow Dreams Cafe, Taguig City University, and Adamson University Teams A and B. The top four teams from the single elimination round-robin tournament will move on to the semifinals.

The tournament, while giving volleyball fans a chance to see their favorite players, will also provide an avenue for the participating squads to prepare for their respective mother leagues, says event organizer and Akari Lady Falcons asst. team manager, Amanda Villanueva. “We want it to be successful and for everybody to enjoy the games – not just the players, but also the one that really support the sport. Secondly, we want to give exposure to everyone, not only to the Adamson volleyball team. Para ‘di lang sa pag-grow ng game, but also individually as an athlete,” the former Lady Falcon added.

For his part, Russell Balbacal, Akari’s sports director, says that organizing the tournament is in itself a small feat. “We are happy to host this tournament and bring together players to compete in a sport they are passionate about. It’s good to be able to extend support to other teams as well, while remaining committed to the Adamson sports programs.”

All games will be held at the Adamson Gym on free admission, every Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. and every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
