Adamson battles pumped-up UP in penultimate assignment

With the twice-to-beat advantage no longer in sight, Adamson focuses on finishing the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament elimination round with a bang as the Soaring Falcons take on UP Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

La Salle demolished NU on Saturday night to lock up at least the second seed in the Final Four, leaving Adamson with no chance of nabbing the important incentive.

Nonetheless, expect the Falcons to go on the offensive early against the Fighting Maroons, as they try to gather momentum heading into the semifinals.

“It’s getting close to the end of the second round. We can’t afford to lose anymore games in order for us to be at the top of the standings,” said top gunner Jerrick Ahanmisi.

Ahanmisi has been on fire lately for the San Marcelino crew, even earning the UAAP Player of the Week plum — the first Falcon to be cited as such in the past few seasons.

But beating the Diliman cagers is easier said than done, as evidenced by the team’s first-round matchup.

Adamson needed a game-winning putback by Sean Manganti to squeak past UP last October 4 in a game where they trailed early after yet another flat start.

Coach Franz Pumaren, however, expects a different and more cohesive team to show up 12 games into the season.
