Adamson gets stunned by Ateneo in season opener

After so much fanfare before the season, the Adamson University Soaring Falcons were stunned and fell to the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, 85-65, in their opening game of UAAP Season 80, Saturday afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay city.

Playing without Pape Sarr who is nursing a groin injury, the Falcons dropped to a 8-0 to start the game. It was a lead that Adamson would not overcome as Ateneo pushed their advantage to as much as 17 points before halftime.

Come the fourth quarter, the Falcons managed to cut the lead to single digits at nine, 54-63, via a 9-2 run courtesy of new guys Kurt Lojera and Keith Zaldivar but it would be the closest they would come.

Thirdy Ravena led last year’s finalists Ateneo with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds while Chi Ikeh chipped in his own versio  of a double-double with 18 markers and 17 boards.

For the Falcons, the rookie swingman Lojera led with 11 points and three steals along with fellow-rookie Zaldivar who tallied 10 markers and five boards.

Lead guards Jerrick Ahanmisi and Rob Manalang were held to nine and six points respectively as Adamson was held to a miserable 18% (4-of-22) shooting from the three-point line.

The Falcons will next face the UST Growling Tigers on September 16 at 4 pm.
